BE SURE TO READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE

Ringette season will soon be upon us once again! Ringette PEI wants to be sure info and communication regarding the High Performance program (AA-Wave and A-Edge teams) for the 2023-2024 season is out to the membership well in advance. We are hoping by communicating this info early, families can plan accordingly and not have these dates affect summer plans! Right now we are looking at the following timeline for important High Performance dates:

  • Tuesday, June 27th- Call for Wave coaches
  • Monday, July 10th- Call for Wave coaches closes
  • Wednesday, July 12th- Wave coach interviews
  • Monday, July 17th- Registration for HP tryouts opens, this includes both Wave and Edge for U14, U16, and U19
  • Friday, August 4th- Tryout registration closes
  • Monday, August 14th- Call for Edge coaches
  • TENTATIVE: Week of August 21st- September 6th- Wave tryouts
  • Monday, September 11th - Call for Edge coaches closes
  • Wednesday, September 13th- Edge coach interviews
  • TENTATIVE Weekend of September 15th- Edge tryouts start

**Note, these dates are subject to change**

We are aware of important dates pertaining to softball and will make all efforts to avoid conflict with these.

There will be a change to the tryout process and fee. For athletes planning to attend the Wave program tryouts, a $100 fee will be required. This fee will guarantee two ice times before cuts will be made with the Wave program then two ice times with the Edge program. Depending on the number of athletes present at tryouts for each age division, cuts may happen at different ice times but not before two ice times have occurred. For athletes interested in only attending Edge program tryouts a $60 fee will be required, guaranteed two ice times.

As many are aware for the 2022-2023 season, there was the option for high performance athletes to opt-out of playing on a house league team with their local association. This was a pilot project for the one season with the plans to re-evaluate prior to the 2023-2024 season. In order to re-evaluate, Ringette PEI conducted multiple surveys to gather feedback from athletes, parents, coaches, and board members involved with both local associations and at the high performance level. After consultation with representatives from each local association, the following recommendation was brought to the Ringette PEI Board of Directors on Monday, June 26th, 2023:

For the 2023-2024 season,

  • U14 aged athletes, born in 2010 or 2011, will be required to play on a house league team with their local association.
  • First year U16 aged athletes, born 2009, will be required to play on a house league team with their local association.
  • Second year U16 aged athletes, born 2008, will have the option to opt-out of house league if they choose or they can play both house league and high performance.
  • U19 aged athletes, born 2007, 2006, and 2005, will have the option to opt-out of house league if they choose or they can play both house league and high performance.

After some discussion regarding the above information a motion was presented and a vote proceeded. The motion passed unanimously in favour of the above recommendation for the 2023-2024 season only. A small committee has also been formed to develop policy and guidelines to help athletes, parents, and coaches navigate any possible conflicts between house league and high performance. All attempts will be made to limit conflicts but there will be a matrix available to aid in making a decision regarding any conflicts that do arise. This info will be shared prior to the start of the season.

As we once again work through a different looking season, we hope our membership will be patient and work together to provide the best ringette experience we can. We do know challenges will arise but we are hopeful we will alleviate many that we faced last season.
